Linda Goett Collins writes, “I attended Ursuline from Kindergarten to my high school graduation in 1973. There are so many memories and antidotes, but the most important blessing from my time at Ursuline has been the friendships that had been formed and nurtured during those 13 years and have stood the test of time. I met Margaret Gold (Peggy Gold Wittenschlaeger) on my first day of Kindergarten, Melinda Hyde (Melinda Hyde Girardi) in 5th grade, and Bonnie Vachris (Bonnie Vachris Wilson), Peggy Healy (Peggy Healy McCoy), Ann Grunert, and Patti Mansure (Patti Mansure Stiles) in freshman year. They are all graduates of the Class of ‘73. We keep in touch many different ways but the majority of us manage to have a weekend reunion together once a year. We have enjoyed and endured the highs and lows together——marriages, births, weddings, sickness, and death. Our faith in God and love for each other have pulled us through and I think they would all agree that we learned the core of our values from our time spent at Ursuline. Melinda and Bonnie have children who have also had the opportunity to experience many great years at Ursuline.”

Cindi Mallon Sutera: Teens Against Poverty is a non-profit corporation that I started with my children and their friends in 2006. Our mission is to educate students about the affects of poverty, fundraise and have fun. Last year we partnered with a fellow Ursuline Alum, Sister Mary Reese ‘40, to help a group of AIDS Orphans in Tanzania Africa. Sister Mary and her group diligently work at Tupendane Cottage in Tanzania Africa. She finds young women who because of circumstances have become responsible for their family’s well-being. Tupendane Cottage brings the girls in daily to teach them a wage earning craft. The students of Teens Against Poverty and I are a sales channel for the lovely girls of Tupendance. We are selling handmade holiday cards and beaded bracelets. A sample of their work can be found at www.teensagainstpoverty.com/african_projects.html .
I hope that the generous Ursuline community will help us, help the young women in Tanzania. For more information or to make a direct donation, we can be contacted at info@teensagainstpoverty.com or by calling 610-613-2773. God bless. (posted 12-09-09)

Residing at Christ’s College, founded in 1505, she had the opportunity to experience the same campus as John Milton, Charles Darwin, and many others. In London, Erin took a literary tour, attended a performance of Pygmalion, and visited the must-see sights such as Buckingham Palace and the National Portrait Gallery. The group also traveled to Greenwich, Westminster by way of the Thames, Stonehenge, Bath, and Canterbury. I am majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Deafness and Hearing Studies. Upon graduation I hope to go to graduate school for Deaf Education. Currently at Penn State I have the AMAZING opportunity to be a Penn State Dance Marathon Rules and Regulations Captain. The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (refereed to lovingly as THON) is a 46 hour stand on your feet marathon. All of the money that we (the students raise) goes to The Four Diamonds Fund which benefit the children and families who are courageously battling Pediatric Cancer and are being treated at the Penn State Children’s Hospital at Hershey Medical Center. Last year we raised $6,615,318.04 and in total we have raised over $52 million. There are 700 dancers and 15,000 student volunteers. This February 20-22 I will be in the Bryce Jordan Center doing my part to battle pediatric cancer. I will be one of the 34 captains that is ensuring the safety of the dancer, Four Diamond families, and general public. Nina Monzo: Was invited by the Dean of Engineering (all expenses paid) to attend and represent Drexel at the upcoming NATO Advanced Study Institute on Microsystems for Security in Turkey from August 21 thru September 3, 2009.

Anne Sheldrake: I’m a sophomore majoring in Chemical Engineering and minoring in Spanish at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA. It has been an amazing but challenging experience. I have had numerous opportunities with attending such a large school. This past summer I was able to spend three weeks visiting Ojibwe Indian reservations in Minnesota as I learned history looking eastward, rather than west. The rest of my summer was spent as an intern at the Center for Composite Materials at the University of Delaware, where I conducted research on Kevlar high performance fibers. This year, I have become involved in continuing research in Chemical Engineering laboratory as well as serving as an officer for the Society of Women Engineers. I had the opportunity to visit Long Beach, CA and attend the Society of Women Engineers National Conference. Over Christmas break, I will be taking a class on theater and cultural diversity and have the chance to visit London for two weeks! I’ve also taken up running as a hobby and have participated in several 5K’s. It can be challenging to balance these activities with my rigorous academics in the Schreyer’s Honors College, but the rewards are worth it! (posted 11-10-09)
